Scientifically sound research is a valuable tool available for all communicators to strengthen and substantiate their messages. However, the numbers are not always easy to dissect, comprehend and relay; and differentiating between valid research and junk science is increasingly difficult. Independent media makers will gain the tools to create strong messages to provide credible alternatives to mainstream media. The workshop will help advocates, journalists, bloggers, and PR professionals understand research and statistics; where to find good evidence; and how to use it to effectively support their arguments. Participants will learn how to decipher and interpret solid research, and to effectively use it in messaging, either for journalists writing a story, or an advocate or publicist pitching the story. We aim to create understanding on how journalists and advocates can work together to further communications goals. Skills-building workshops, group activities, role playing, writing exercises; and take-home materials make this interactive!
